Calculations

Statistics is a mathematical science in which calculations on sets of numbers are often required. Although statistical computations are nearly always done on a computer, it is important to understand how the calculations are done using a handheld calculator. The numbers collectively are called data and they represent observed measurements or attributes on individuals. The purpose of this module is to practice doing basic statistical calculations.

You should have paper, a pencil, and a calculator. If you do not have a calculator, you can use the Java Calculator. It operates as a normal hand-held calculator.

Example #1 shows how to perform the following calculations on a set of numbers :
Evaluations are also done for and .

Exercise #1 consists of a series of statistical expressions which you will evaluate using a set of numbers. It is similar to Example #1.

Exercise #2 (Spiders Webs' Angles) consists of a series of statistical calculations on a spiders webs' angles (in degrees) to the vertical of the Earth's surface. It is similar to Example #1.
